Matthew Eguavoen is a Nigerian contemporary painter whose figurative practice addresses the social, political, and economic complexities of life in Nigeria today. Trained as a civil engineer at the University of Port Harcourt, he chose in his final year to pursue art through self-study, a decision that has led to a full-time career as a painter.

Eguavoen works primarily with oil, acrylic, charcoal, and graphite to create portraits that document the emotions, resilience, and lived realities of his subjects. His compositions act as both personal narratives and broader commentaries, grappling with themes such as inequality, displacement, and the pressures of survival within restrictive social ideologies. His work also reflects on the lingering impact of slavery and colonialism, the erosion of traditional African values, and the influence of religion and imported cultural frameworks on contemporary Nigerian life.

Deeply concerned with the role of art in shaping both local and global conversations, Eguavoen situates his practice as a means of bearing witness to human experience while advocating for community and dignity. His work is held in private and institutional collections across West Africa, Europe, and the United States.
