Matthew Eguavoen captures narratives that convey the emotions and presence of his subjects, inviting viewers into their lived experiences. His practice engages with the layered social, economic, and political realities that shape life in Nigeria, particularly the constraints imposed by dominant societal ideologies on human existence and survival. Eguavoen is deeply mindful of his immediate environment and the broader world. As a result, his art explores themes of imbalance and inequality, and how societal pressures in Nigeria (marriage, financial goals, family responsibilities) can diminish ones well-being and undermine the foundations of community.
