The Collection

Wendy Red Star’s research-driven practice seeks to share and reframe archival materials in the form of serialized compositions. This body of work is comprised of photographic prints originally created for Bíilukaa. Drawn entirely from images in the artist’s personal archive, the series brings together her photographs of cultural objects with historical images sourced from public collections.

Photographs of dresses, moccasins and fans are presented alongside historic black-and-white images of Apsáalooke people. Surrounding these pairings, Red Star’s annotations and handwritten notes interpret, update, and comment on these archival records. By mining her own archive, the works offer a glimpse into her research process and personal collection, restaging the methods through which she traces the material history of her community into the present day.
