A citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation in Montana, Smith uses her work to engage with themes of environmentalism, cultural preservation, and racism, amplifying Indigenous voices in the contemporary art world. "Memory Maps", as seen in Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, are pivotal, mixed-media works using cartography to reframe Indigenous history, land rights, and environmentalism. By deconstructing US maps, she replaces colonial narratives with Native perspectives on place, memory, and stolen land. These maps act as counter-narratives to traditional, sanitized history
