Malcolm Mobutu Smith is a ceramic artist and educator whose dynamic vessels merge formal tradition with the improvisational spirit of Hip Hop, Jazz, graffiti, and comics. His work plays between volumetric form and graphic flatness, often manifesting as abstractions of familiar functional objects—cups, bottles, and vases—infused with playful organic abstraction. Smith’s improvisational process creates works that are simultaneously sculptural and decorative, reflecting on identity, culture, and the aesthetic desires of contemporary life.
Smith earned his BFA in ceramics from Penn State University (1994), studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, and received his MFA from Alfred University’s New York State College of Ceramics (1996). He is currently Associate Professor of Ceramic Art at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has participated in residencies at Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, and the Robert McNamara Foundation, and regularly presents workshops and lectures nationally and internationally.
His works have been exhibited at venues such as the Luise Ross Gallery (New York), the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Kansas City), and the FuLe International Ceramic Art Museum (Beijing). They are held in the collections of the Haan Museum, the Indiana State Museum, and the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, among others.
