Chris Soal is a South African sculptor whose practice engages everyday ephemera—such as toothpicks, bottle caps, rebar, and concrete—to create works that challenge perceptions of value, materiality, and place. Shaped by his upbringing in Johannesburg and now based in Cape Town, Soal transforms discarded and industrial materials into uncanny, biomorphic forms that evoke natural phenomena while addressing themes of ecology, urban living, and social abstraction.

Working with processes of aggregation, erosion, and combination, Soal foregrounds the phenomenological qualities of his chosen objects, allowing their textures, tactility, and light-reflecting surfaces to redefine space and perception. His works, such as As below so above (2021), merge sculptural presence with ecological and cultural commentary, positioning the viewer as an active agent in rethinking contemporary environments.

Soal has exhibited widely in South Africa and internationally, with solo and group presentations in France, Belgium, and beyond. His critically acclaimed practice continues to garner recognition for its innovative engagement with both material and social contexts.
