Titus Kaphar lives and works in New Haven, CT. His paintings, sculptures, and installations examine the history of representation, reworking traditional forms to reveal hidden narratives and question how history is constructed. Through processes of cutting, layering, erasing, and exposing the physical structure of his works, Kaphar uncovers what has been omitted and invites a reconsideration of the past’s relevance today.
Kaphar received an MFA from the Yale School of Art and is the recipient of numerous awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship (2018). His work has been exhibited at institutions such as MoMA PS1, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the National Portrait Gallery, and is held in major collections including The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Committed to social engagement, Kaphar is the founder of NXTHVN, a New Haven–based initiative supporting emerging artists and curators of color through mentorship, education, and professional development.
