Jerrell Gibbs is a painter whose portraits of Black life dismantle stereotypes by presenting subjects in moments of rest, intimacy, and joy. His bright, contemplative canvases often depict domestic interiors or lush natural landscapes, rendering sitters and their surroundings with equal care. By adorning his figures with flowers or situating them in peaceful contexts, Gibbs resists reductive narratives of trauma and violence, instead highlighting dignity, tenderness, and the everyday.

Working frequently from Polaroids and family archives, Gibbs transforms ordinary moments into scenes of emotional resonance. His compositions balance proportion, placement, and painterly gesture to honor the fullness of Black experience—men as fathers, brothers, sons, and husbands—while asserting legacy and cultural continuity.

Gibbs received his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting (2020). His work has been exhibited in Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and is held in the permanent collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art, X Museum (Beijing), and the CC Foundation (Shanghai).
