Wu Chi-Tsung is a Taiwanese multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary image-making technologies. Trained in calligraphy, ink painting, watercolor, and drawing from an early age, Wu has developed a practice that spans painting, photography, video, installation, and stage design. His art reflects a deep engagement with the material and philosophical underpinnings of both Eastern and Western traditions, seeking to reinterpret notions of landscape, perception, and temporality.
Wu’s acclaimed Wrinkled Texture and Cyano-Collage series employ cyanotype techniques on Xuan paper to reimagine the textural methods (cun fa) of Chinese ink painting. By “recording light” on fragile handmade paper, Wu creates works that embody the tension between chance and control, nature and human intervention. These series exemplify his broader practice: an experimental yet meditative approach that dissolves boundaries between mediums and traditions.
Since receiving his BFA from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2004, Wu has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; National Museum Cardiff, UK; Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art Contemporain; Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Seoul Museum of Art; Minsheng 21st Century Museum, Shanghai; Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art; Long Beach Museum of Art, CA; and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. In 2023, the Katonah Museum of Art in New York presented Synchronicity, his first solo museum exhibition in the United States.
Wu is the recipient of the Liu Kuo-Sung Ink Art Award (2019), the WRO Media Art Biennial Award (2013), and the Taipei Arts Award (2003). He was shortlisted for the Artes Mundi Prize (2006) and the Prudential Eye Awards (2015). His work is held in major collections worldwide, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; M+ Museum, Hong Kong; UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, Istanbul.
Wu lives and works between Taipei, Taiwan and Berlin, Germany.
