Judith Shaw

United States, b. 1953

Judith Shaw is a conceptual artist whose work transforms personal struggle into visual exploration. She began her creative career during treatment for anorexia, when the act of making sculpture became a vehicle for recovery and self-discovery. Her earliest pieces, constructed from cardboard boxes, defied easy categorization, blending unexpected materials and unconventional techniques in raw, visceral forms.

Shaw’s practice remains rooted in this urgency and honesty, evolving to incorporate found objects and everyday items in works that probe themes of human turbulence, identity, and selfhood. What began as a deeply private, emotional inquiry has expanded into a practice that resonates broadly, reflecting the universality of vulnerability and resilience.

Driven by intensity and necessity, Shaw describes her process as “spilling her guts” into images and forms—work that is at once unflinching and accessible, personal and universal.
