Helder Batista

France, b. 1964

Helder Batista is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans sculpture, painting, and installation. Formerly an ambulance driver, Batista was deeply influenced by his experiences witnessing the disparities and fragilities of contemporary society, themes that continue to shape his artistic investigations. Working with materials such as resin, concrete, wood, neon, oil, and acrylic, he creates works that are at once symbolic and ambiguous, privileging freedom of expression and open interpretation.

Drawing inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, Batista seeks a stripped-down visual language that invites viewers to project their own ideas and meanings. His practice often engages social and political questions, most notably in his Flag Gun series, where firearms are wrapped in national flags to interrogate the intersections of power, identity, and violence.

Batista’s art resists didacticism, aiming instead to spark dialogue and reflection on globalization, overconsumption, and societal contradictions. His work has established him as a distinctive voice in contemporary French art, blending material experimentation with a critical, socially attuned sensibility.
