Andrew Bolam

United Kingdom, b. 1971

Andrew Bolam is a painter whose work reimagines the American West through a contemporary lens. Fascinated since childhood by Western films, wildlife, and Native American culture, Bolam presents iconic imagery—cowboys, animals, headdresses—in bold, graphic compositions that balance homage, deconstruction, and meditation. His paintings encourage viewers to consider Western icons as both emblems of cultural heritage and enduring symbols of pop culture.

Trained in Graphic Design at Newcastle College of Art, Bolam moved to Southern California in 1991 to work as a freelance illustrator before settling in Lake Tahoe in 1996 to paint full time. Over the past two decades, his practice has evolved from representational Western landscapes into a distinctive style rooted in abstraction, silhouettes, and layered acrylic surfaces. Recent series explore primal visual cognition through animal outlines, connecting contemporary painting to prehistoric cave art and the emotional instincts that drive human perception.

Bolam’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries across the American West and was most recently featured at the Museum of the West in Scottsdale, Arizona.
